Golden State Valkyries ride to the WNBA

After the announcement of the future WNBA franchise linked to the Golden State Warriors, we now know the name of it, and it is therefore the Golden State Valkyries !

The team will make its debut in the women's league in 2025 and the revelation of its official name, as well as its logo, is the first step in publicly building the image of this new club.

“As much as I always loved saying 'WNBA Golden State,' it was just a step.” explains Jess Smiththe president of the Valkyries. “Being able to plant this flag in the ground, start building the brand and start bringing our community together around this project, it’s a really special moment.”

But why did you choose the name Valkyries, when the San Francisco Bay does not really have a link with Norse mythology, the Valkyries being warrior goddesses in the service of the god Odin that the composer Richard Wagner popularized with his famous “ Ride of the Valkyries”?

Mixed symbols

No doubt the club was looking for a female equivalent to the Warriors, and the choices known to the general public were probably limited to Valkyries or Amazons, this second name could logically lead to confusion…

On the Golden State side, we played quite a bit with the symbolism of the Valkyries and San Francisco. The main color is purple, “color of women’s emancipation in modern history”, recalls the press release. As for the logo, it mixes the image of the Bay Bridge with that of a sword, all in a V which represents the formation of the Valkyries when they fight, but also their wings.

Like the Warriors, the Golden State Valkyries will play at Chase Center and they will train in the former training center of Stephen Curry and company, in Oakland. And enthusiasm already seems to be there in the Bay since the club explains that 7,500 requests for annual subscriptions have already been sent.
