Giannis Antetokounmpo had not followed the pack of NBA players who attacked Noah Lyles after the sprinter’s comments, on the expression “world champions” written on the cap and T-shirts of NBA champions.
On the occasion of his first participation in the podcast “48 minutes”, the Greek international, withdrawn from the competition, finally spoke on the subject, sharing the logic of Noah Lyles.
“I wanted to support him so much,” he said. “He received so much backlash for saying something obvious, but some people don’t understand it. Maybe there’s some arrogance in that.”
“To be world champion, you have to beat the world”
Noah Lyles’ call to order was thus confirmed by the final result in the World Cup. As such, only Germany can now be designated as world champion.
“It’s when you play in the World Cup, when you face Team USA and other countries around the world, that we can say that you are world champion,” he recalled. “Manu Ginobili said it best. When Argentina won the World Cup in 2006, he could say he was world champion, because he went there, he beat the Greek team that had previously beaten the States -United, and that he beat the Spanish and Brazilian teams (…). At the end of the day, to be world champion you have to beat the world. I know the NBA is the best league in the world and its players are the most talented you will ever see. But we can’t say we are the world champions because we play in the best league in the world. We must respect the teams which are champions of the Euroleague, Greece, Spain and France”.
The Bucks power forward, NBA champion in 2021, will perhaps help raise awareness across the Atlantic on a subject that seems very sensitive given the responses of NBA players to Noah Lyles.
“I might get some criticism about it, but I don’t care: I completely agree with him, because he’s on the world stage. It’s the best in the United States, but it’s also beaten other competitors around the world. This is where you can call yourself world champion, by facing everyone”.
