Giannis Antetokounmpo: “Damian and I are the same person, just different sizes”

“Money isn’t important, but when it’s a lot of money, it is. So I’m going to sign next year. This doesn’t make sense right now. I want to be a Milwaukee Buck for the rest of my career, as long as we win. It’s as simple as that “.

Giannis Antetokounmpo recalled Monday that his commitment to the Bucks remained linked to the ambitions of its leaders, who reacted to his pressure by bringing in Damian Lillard. But it’s not just that, since its extension also remains linked to the financial aspect.

During his first press conference which officially launched the preparation for Milwaukee, the “Greek Freak” put the crux of the matter back at the center of attention. If he had extended this summer, he would have received “only” $169 million over three years. Next summer, he will be able to sign a much more juicy commitment, to the tune of 233 million over four years (or around two million dollars more per season…). His choice was therefore quickly seen.

“The commitment for me, from the team, is there. But this year it didn’t make sense.”, he concluded about this upcoming contract extension.

The athlete first, the financier then

If the Lillard-Antetokounmpo association is attractive on paper, we still need to make the right adjustments to approach next summer in the best conditions when it comes time to extend.

A major challenge since Milwaukee has just completed five seasons on the Eastern Conference podium with an NBA championship title in 2021 as a bonus. For now, however, Giannis Antetokounmpo is convinced that the arrival of Damian Lillard can help the Bucks continue their rise.

“I feel like we’re the same person, just different sizes. He plays with his head on his shoulders. He plays to win. It is built the same way. I need Lady to be Lady and I think he needs me to be myself.”continued the “Greek Freak”.

Same story for “Dame Time”, which sees the new duo he forms with the Greek international do great things quickly.

“I think we will complement each other,” he said. “He’s the type of guy who doesn’t worry about being the No. 1 option or anything else. So I think it will work perfectly.”
