You can be an NBA champion franchise five years ago, have a very solid staff and still use the good old methods to find the rare pearl. This is what the Raptors 905, a G-League team affiliated with the Toronto franchise, have concluded, which simply decided to open the doors of the OVO Centre on Saturday to organize… detection days!
In the midst of restructuring at all levels, Toronto is taking the opportunity to cast a wide net, since the objective of the process is to offer a player from these tests to join the training camp that will begin on October 1 in Montreal and why not make his place in the squad. As explained by Luke Winn, a manager of Raptors 905, the operation was a success since nearly 50 players showed up!
A method brought by the new coach
“I think this is a very important step for the youth movement at the Raptors.”, he confidedwhile the training camp will also serve as a test for the four players drafted last June, Ja'Kobe Walter, Jonathan Mogbo, Jamal Shead and Ulrich Chomche.“We have guys competing for spots in Raptors training camp and those that don't necessarily make the cut will go into the 905 over the next few weeks, which will allow us to build the core of our team.”
The initiative to organize open scouting sessions comes from the new coach of the Raptors 905, Drew Jones. The latter took advantage of his first sessions to recall the objective of his first season: to create an identity and a state of mind. We pick up a teammate who falls, we thank the staff and the referees after a training session, and we work hard, these were the watchwords of the new strongman of the Raptors 905.
“Our habits, our work and our environment are going to be key. Who we are matters, and how we build ourselves matters too. I’m excited about the upcoming season. But I’m even more excited about creating an atmosphere where our talent can really grow and flourish,” he said. “Guys have to want to be there. I think it starts with us, our staff, our identity, who we are. Guys have to want to come to work, and feel like we’re investing in them, in their development.”
It won't be long before we know whether the organization of this unique session allowed Raptors 905 to find the rare pearl.
