As could be expected from the rumors and his latest statements, Paul George has decided to give up his final year of contract with an option of 48.7 million in order to become a free agent and test the market. The news was made official during the night by Adrian Wojnarowski, making PG13 a “free agent” from the opening of free agency this Sunday.
This is the logical continuation, since Paul George did not manage to obtain his expected extension at 221 million over four years, unlike Kawhi Leonard, extended for 152 million dollars over three years. ESPN specifies that Paul George has already planned to speak with three franchises: the Clippers, for whom the winger leaves the door open in the event of a big offer, but also the Philadelphia Sixers, who dream of building a “Big Three” with him alongside Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, and finally the Magic, on the lookout for all the good opportunities in free agency to expand their roster. For now, no Warriors, no Nuggets…
Note that only the Clippers will be able to offer him $221 million over four years. The other franchises will not be able to offer him more than $212 million. The balance of power has therefore changed, it is now Paul George's turn to find himself with the cards in hand regarding his future. It is also the Clippers' turn to run after him and do their best to keep him.
“We love Paul”declared Lawrence Frank, president of the Clippers, Thursday. “We really want to keep Paul, but we understand and respect the fact that this is a business. We hope that Paul will decide to stay here. He was great. He was an All-Star. He is one of the best two-way players in the league. He's a great person. He has a great family, so we hope he stays there, but we respect his choice. He deserved it and we’ll see how things go.”
The Clippers also have assets to assert beyond the financial aspect, notably with the new arena and a squad that remains competitive, at least as much as those of the Sixers and the Magic, even if these two franchises play in a less competitive conference.
