His name doesn't mean much to NBA fans, and yet, Frank Selvy was an American basketball legend. Died Tuesday at the age of 91this rear had played nine seasons in the NBA, and above all he holds the record for points in an NCAA game: 100 points, all round. Like Wilt Chamberlain in the NBA.
Considered the greatest athlete to come out of Furman University, Selvy had set the scorers ablaze between 1952 and 1954, averaging 41.7 points in his senior year. It was that year, in 1953, that he scored 100 points in a win over Newberry. In 78 college games, he had scored 40 points or more 22 times.
To the Lakers during the move to Los Angeles
Selected first overall in the 1954 Draft by the Baltimore Bullets, he would play for five franchises in nine years. A two-time All-Star, Frank Selvy would spend four and a half seasons with the Lakers, and would be part of the move from Minneapolis to Los Angeles.
After his playing career, he would return to Furman to become a coach.
