For their GM, “we won’t be the Pistons until we defend”

With the return of Cade Cunningham and the arrival of Monty Williams on the bench, the Pistons hope to turn a corner this season after several gloomy years. To lay the foundations for this ascent, Troy Weaver draws up the course of action to follow.

“I am excited and very curious to see how we will unite this team and how quickly it will take”announces the GM of the franchise for the Michigan Live. “But to start, we talked about the three Ds for this program with the coach: discipline, development and defense. That won’t move. »

What exactly does the leader mean when he talks about discipline and development?

“When we look at our matches last season, we were sometimes in it, but then we lacked the discipline to win them. As for development, it is not only about improving shooting or dribbling, it is also being able, for the team, to be concentrated and maintain efforts over long periods. »

A 3D construction

To gain quality in these two areas, the Pistons recruited players with skill during the offseason.

“We have more depth and experience. It’s obvious that by bringing back veterans like Monte Morris and Joe Harris, we strengthen the group. They made the playoffs, played a lot, played on winning teams. This experience is an added value for our group, and we can’t wait to see what it will bring to the rookies. »

But Troy Weaver doesn’t forget the last “D” in his slogan: defense. The Pistons were among the worst in the league last season and without clear progress in this sector, the franchise cannot hope for anything.

“Since I arrived here, this is our richest squad and it’s time to reverse the trend and focus on defense,” he warns. “We won’t be the Pistons until we defend. I’ve spoken to all the players about this, coach Monty Williams and the squad know it very well. »
