For Kevin Durant, the NBA was not more physical in the 80s and 90s…

Was the NBA before, in the 80s, harder and more physical than today? The subject is one of the favorite themes of alumni who believe that the NBA has gained in talent, what it has lost in hardness and physical dimension.

An observation not necessarily shared by Kevin Durant who has lived the evolution of the NBA since its arrival in 2007, and delivered its point of view on the question in its podcast “The ETCs”. The Suns winger believes that the NBA before was above all physical for its many borderline defensive gestures which fueled the large number of flagrant fouls, which were also not penalized as much as today.

“I still watch a lot of match videos from the 90s, 80s, and they play physical, but I think they were mostly doing a lot of flagrant fouls”did he declare. “I think that’s why they say their era is more physical than ours. Because we also play physical.

What is changing today is also that the physical dimension translates into the high pace and intensity at which the game is now played.

“I watched some of those games, the racket was clear, no one was getting tagged, there wasn’t a lot of help on defense. But there were a lot of blatant fouls that didn’t result in fines or ejection from the game, so it felt like it was a bit tougher.”, added KD.

Different size and physical requirements

Part of the team that symbolized this “hard” NBA at the end of the 1980s, former Pistons captain Joe Dumars made a similar observation to that of KD, believing that today’s game is much more physically demanding on many points.

“The game is more stretched out, there are probably a lot more cuts. These are facts. I don’t think there is any argument against that. I imagine it probably wears down the physique more. I don’t see how anyone could object to that.”

In conclusion, the two could almost agree that the NBA is just as physical as before, but just in different ways. “There is more space, but the guys play physically. We have big, athletic guys here too”concluded Kevin Durant.
