Last week, in the home stretch of the World Cup, our colleagues BasketNews revealed that FIBA had an envelope of 3.2 million euros to share between the different teams. A “cake” of bonuses, the largest shares of which are distributed to the 16 best teams, with a check for 150,000 euros, compared to 50,000 euros for the teams ranked from 17th to 32nd place.
The International Federation reacted to this information, specifying that these were not “bonuses” but “compensation” for the costs incurred for the competition.
“There are no bonuses for the World Cup. FIBA supports the federations by covering a large part of their costs. We have paid directly or indirectly more than 80 million Swiss francs (around 84 million euros) to the federations to cover their costs over the last four years., replied Andreas Zagklisthe general secretary of the Federation.
Other costs incurred include those relating to insurance for players involved in international competitions. For the next cycle, FIBA has planned a budget of more than 15 million Swiss francs for player insurance alone, and that includes 3×3 and wheelchair basketball players.
