Erik Spoelstra: “In sport as in life, you don’t always get what you want”

No regrets. This was the overall message from Erik Spoelstra after his team’s defeat against the Nuggets in the 2023 Finals. Heat players simply fell on too strong a team.

“Yeah, we wish we could have climbed the top of the mountain and taken that last victory. But I think a lot of people can identify with this team.” prefers to retain Erik Spoelstra. “If you’ve ever felt like you were left out or made to feel like you weren’t good enough. There’s a lot of guys in our locker room who’ve probably been through this, and there’s probably a lot of people who’ve felt this at one point or another. »

Overall, the coach mostly wants to remember the journey, rather than the end.

“There is also the way this team handled setbacks and adversity, to develop their collective courage and perseverance. I’ve said before that I hope these lessons transcend sport, that we can pass them on to our children, because even though it’s sport, there are life lessons to be learned from this game: that ‘you can persevere, that you can deal with what people see as setbacks along the way and come out stronger, that you can overcome hardships and learn from them’.

“We came up against a team that was simply better than us in this series”

Erik Spoelstra thus pays tribute to the Nuggets, to whom he takes his hat. “It’s a hell of a basketball team” explains the Florida coach about Mike Malone’s troupe. “They play the right way, they are competitive, they are well trained and they have a strong culture. This season, they deserve the title.”

“It’s obvious that we didn’t win the final victory, but it’s true in sport as in life: you don’t always get what you want. But we have no regrets. Everyone, the staff and the players, in the locker room, gave their all for the team, doing what was best for them. And the hardest pill to swallow is that it wasn’t enough. We came up against a team that was simply better than us in this series. »

Despite everything, there will remain the memories of this epic.

“You know, some of the messages I’ve given to the team are intimate, group-only messages. But what I can tell you is that we are all ready to fight for the supreme title. We are also ready to create lifelong memories, a brotherhood and a bond that we can maintain in the years to come, because we were able to experience something memorable. I told each of the guys that I liked them. I love this team and I’m very grateful that we were able to have all these experiences, even in the difficult times of the year, to be able to have a season like this. »
