We would almost forget it but Dwyane Wade is part of this exceptional 2023 vintage of the Hall Of Fame. Like Tony Parker, Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki, the former Heat back marked his generation with three NBA championship titles, 13 All-Star selections, a Finals MVP title or an All-Star game MVP trophy. and two Olympic titles. Enough to make a certain Paul Pierce jealous, who remains convinced that he was better than Wade, even if he only won one title…
“If you need a basket at the very end of the match, who would you take: Dwyane Wade or me? If you want to win the match, who do you give the ball to? » asked Pierce a few weeks ago on the set of It Is What It Is. “Put Shaq on my team. Put LeBron and Bosh with me. Won’t you win? “Put me, LeBron and Bosh… aren’t we going to win two titles? For a long time, my qualities were not appreciated because I did not have the opportunity to play with many great players. And then I played with KG and Ray [Allen] who were no longer in the prime of life. Four years ago, you put me, Ray and KG together, you think we’re not going to walk away with three rings”.
Who creates “superteams”: players or managers?
Guest of show by Dan Le Batard, Wade was asked about these statements. The host reminded him that the Heat had gone to get Allen from the Celtics to win one more title, and that the creation of the “Three Amigos” had upset the landscape of the NBA, even to the point of attracting the wrath of David Stern. But Wade fights back.
“I’m done with basketball. I don’t compare myself to someone who doesn’t play or plays, that’s not my challenge anymore” he says about Paul Pierce. “Everyone is reacting as if we were the ones who did this. Maybe it was us, the players, who decided to unite, but the franchises were trying to find a solution. It was our time, and we had our time. I’ve had enough, LeBron too, I’m sure. That’s why we decided to get together”.
Dwyane Wade went to get “his Avengers”
The concept of “superteam” already existed before the “Three Amigos”, and the Celtics had also set an example by recruiting Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen the same summer. More recently, James Harden joined Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving at the Nets, and this summer it was Bradley Beal who moved to Phoenix. For Wade, it’s a privilege to be able to do this.
“When you get on the pitch and you have four-five-six guys and the coach is looking at you, calling systems for you, leaving guys open, what great player doesn’t want to do that” , asks Wade. “I went to get my Avengers, and everyone is mad that I got to play with my buddies because I got to play with Shaq, then with LeBron. I am happy with my career. I don’t know who isn’t happy with their career, and I’m sorry if they’re not, but I’m happy with the way mine went.”
