It's the end of an era. After 12 years of playing together, the Curry-Thompson-Green trio will be split next season. Klay Thompson will thus join the Mavericks with whom he signed a three-year, $50 million contract.
After Stephen Curry on social media, Draymond Green has also spoken about the departure of the man with whom he won everything. A departure that had been in the works for a few days.
“I have to say I don't really know what I feel.”, recognizes Draymond Green. “Klay told us last week. I don’t know who he told, but I know he talked to me, I’m pretty sure he talked to Steph last week, and then… he started talking about our journey over the years: ‘It’s been awesome. What we’ve done is so special. You and Steph, my brothers forever.’”
Klay Thompson's Farewell to Draymond Green
Klay Thompson's last game with Golden State was the play-in against the Kings. The shooting guard, whose importance with the Warriors would continue to decline, preferred to look elsewhere.
“And the conversation kind of starts out as a little chat, and you kind of prepare yourself, like, 'Dude, tell me. I know it's coming,'” explains the Warriors power forward. “You enjoy the conversation, but yet, it’s one of those moments where someone takes their time to surprise you… I was going to my daughter’s concert so I didn’t get to delve into the conversation as much as maybe I would have liked, which I think was also a good thing for me because when Klay told me, I just listened to him, and it wasn’t like, ‘Hey, we could end up like this,’ or ‘You should rethink this.’”
This won't be the first time Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have played without Klay Thompson. The guard missed two and a half seasons between 2019 and 2022 due to injuries. But this time, it will be definitive for the Warriors, who have already announced want to take off his jersey.
“I was just like, ‘Wow, okay. Congratulations bro, I’m happy for you. That’s awesome,’ and obviously assured him that it doesn’t change anything for us. It obviously changes on the field, but the relationships will be what they are, and forever.” ” concludes Draymond Green. ” The connection, the bond, because we're all mentioned together, that's never going to change. But, I haven't really been able to handle the emotions… Earlier today, I think I might have shed a few tears, a tear or two, just sitting there and thinking.”
