Draymond Green believes Victor Wembanyama already has too much pressure on his shoulders

Guest of the “Podcast P with Paul George”, Draymond Green spoke of the long-awaited presence of Victor Wembanyama, first choice of the last Draft, at the Summer League in Las Vegas. The interior, recently extended with the Warriors, felt that the Frenchman had far too much pressure on his shoulders, even before playing his first game in the NBA!

Expectations are very high. But for Draymond Green, his first season in the NBA will be above all a season of adaptation and his success will not be conditioned by his presence in the All-Star Game from his rookie season…

“I think people are setting him up for failure by saying he’s going to be an All-Star next year. It’s hard to become an All-Star in this league.”, he reminded. “If he succeeds, thank God. But saying he’ll be an All-Star next year, like he doesn’t need to understand this game, I don’t really believe. I think he’ll be a special player, but an All-Star next year, I think that’s a bit of a stretch.”

A face-to-face that already promises

Inevitably, Draymond Green also projected himself on how he would try to contain the Frenchman. And as you might expect, the strongman of Golden State intends to do everything to try to complicate the task of “Wemby” as soon as they cross paths. What is certain is that we can’t wait to see such a face-to-face!

“You’re not going to dribble past me like a Harlem Globetrotter. I’m sorry “he launched. “You can’t let it settle. If you let him get comfortable, you lose, because you can’t block his shot. He may not even see that you are trying to counter him. So with a guy like that, you have to do your job early. I watch him as soon as he starts running around the field. As soon as they get the rebound and start running, I have my eye on him because I can’t leave him in a space where he’s comfortable.”

Beyond the impressive offensive highlights of Victor Wembanyama which have already made the whole NBA react, Draymond Green thinks for his part that it is the defense of the Frenchman, and particularly his sense of the counter, which could first make him a special player in the NBA.

“I’ll tell you what I think sets him apart from most other players and what will make him very special, regardless of anything else he can do: the fact that he’s a circle protector . That’s what most people don’t talk about and what sets him apart, because if all else fails… he’ll still be the best protector we have in the NBA. So you already have one thing that puts you in an elite category.”
