Draft 2024 | Presentation by Devin Carter (Providence)

A few months ago, he was only the son of Anthony Carter, former NBA point guard. Devin Carter has since made a name for himself, thanks to exponential progression in his third NCAA season, his second at Providence. From an average of 13 points in 2023, the 22-year-old player has almost increased to 20 points.

However, this is not where his main quality lies, as his defensive contribution is obvious. Atypical “Guard” in more than one way, Devin Carter is one of the big winners of the Draft Combine. And he has everything to become the public's favorite where he begins his career.

Profile

Job : fullback/leader
Size : 1m88
Weight : 87 kg
Team : Providence Friars (NCAA)
Stats 2023/24: 19.7 points at 47.3%, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists in 35.3 minutes

Strong points

– A pest in defense. Devin Carter is the very example that you can be decisive defensively by painfully reaching 1.90 meters with the shoes on. His XXL wingspan for his size (2m05), his speed (best time in the Draft Combine in the three-quarter field sprint) and even more his relaxation, possibly the best of this entire vintage, perfectly complement his instinct. With 1.8 interceptions and 1 block on average, he was one of the most productive guards in the NCAA in these two statistical categories.

– A huge heart. Physical qualities are one thing, but the “intangibles” sometimes make the difference in the minds of recruiters. The desire and incessant energy deployed by Devin Carter give the impression that he is simply bigger than he really is. His average of 8.7 rebounds is impressive, and allows him to immediately set the pace for his team.

Weak points

– A shot under construction? “Role player” before this season, Devin Carter seems to have reached a milestone in shooting, with 37.7% success behind the 3-point line and a significant shooting volume (6.8 attempts). But his anything but academic gesture and his lackluster skill at free throws (74.9%) raise doubts about the sustainability of this skill after two first seasons without exceeding 30% by far. Without this weapon in his game, it's hard to see Devin Carter losing the “specialist” label.

Comparison

A mix between Jose Alvarado for his defensive fierceness, and Josh Hart but on the “guard” posts. If his progress in shooting were to be confirmed, his impact could resemble that of a Derrick White.

Prognosis

Between the end of the lottery and the 20e place. ESPN even assures that certain teams in the Top 10 of the Draft could be interested. The Miami native could also interest the Heat with the 15th pick.
