Draft 2024 | Larry Bird monitors Pacers practice

Like last season, Larry Bird made an appearance at the Pacers facility to observe pre-Draft testing. Returning as a “consultant” a year ago, the former Celtics winger and former coach and president of Indiana was not the only one to observe the six players invited to show their talents to the leaders. Not far from him, Tyrese Haliburton and Isaiah Jackson.

“It’s exciting…He’s an NBA legend, who’s been a part of the Pacers organization forever and is also a Celtics legend.” enthuses Jack Gohlke (Oakland). “I think it's really cool…I would say it's almost easier to play in front of a full house than to have these people sitting courtside. But it’s still a really cool experience.”

On the field, in addition to Gohlke, Yongxi Cui (China), Thijs De Ridder (Belgium), Emanuel Miller (TCU), Ajay Mitchell (UC-Santa Barbara) and Tyson Walker (Michigan State), and it was the third wave of tests organized by the Pacers.

No choice in the first round

“As soon as he entered the room, I said to myself: “But I recognize him! “It's amazing to see him here” continues Tyson Walker. “It’s a huge chance to try out in front of him, and it’s a privilege that he’s here.”

This year, the franchise has a lot less pressure since it does not have a first round pick, and it must settle for the 36th, 49th and 50 picks. Which means that the selected players will not have guaranteed contracts, and they could join the franchise via a “two-way contract” or a full season in the G-League.
