Draft 2020: who was not entitled to their contract extension?

The suspense ended yesterday at 5:00 p.m. New York time, the deadline until which NBA franchises could sign contract extensions for players from the 2020 Draft.

Several players remained on the sidelines after this deadline and they will therefore become “free agents” next summer. From this 2020 vintage, they are, in order, Saddiq Bey (Atlanta), Patrick Williams (Chicago), Isaac Okoro (Cavaliers), Obi Toppin (Indiana), Jalen Smith (Pacers), James Wiseman and Killian Hayes (Detroit), Precious Achiuwa (Toronto) but also Immanuel Quickley (New York) or Tyrese Maxey (Sixers). For sporting and/or financial reasons, they were unable to secure a contract extension.

Maxey and Quickley very popular in 2024

For them, this 2023-2024 season will be decisive for the rest of their careers since they will be “protected free agents” next July. Which means they will be able to receive outside offers, which their franchise can match to keep them.

There is therefore an element of risk for teams who preferred to wait before extending their young talents. We are thinking of New York and Philadelphia since Immanuel Quickley, candidate for the best 6th man trophy, and Tyrese Maxey could receive big offers during the next free agency.

Faced with this situation, we would not be surprised if certain players, not extended, were transferred during the season, to avoid losing them in ten months without compensation.
