Doc Rivers reveals Damian Lillard was out of shape this season

A change of city and franchise, a divorce, then an injury in the playoffs and an exit in the first round… It's an understatement to say that the first season of Damian Lillard in Milwaukee was difficult, very difficult. While on vacation, the player spoke of an exercise marked by frustration and disappointment.

And if we follow Doc Rivers, the former Portland star had another obstacle this season: his physical form was not optimal.

“We were at a dinner and he said to me: 'Coach, I haven't worked all summer. This is the first time in my life that I haven't worked physically. I was afraid of getting hurt.”says the Milwaukee coach for Bill Simmons' podcast. “He knew he was going to be transferred so he only did light running, shooting but all alone in the room. He didn't push. »

Damian Lillard's transfer to the Bucks was announced on September 27, 2023, one month before the first game of the regular season.

Result: the All-Star admitted to his coach, who arrived during the season, that he was in “the worst physical form” of her career. “When you start training camp like that, you never get back into shape. We can’t catch up”continues the former Clippers coach.

This problem should not occur again next season since Damian Lillard is already training twice a day and he has reportedly lost weight. “He is proud to be already in great physical shape at the moment”concludes Doc Rivers. “It’s amazing because the Celtics and Mavericks are still playing. Half the league is already working for next season, while two teams are still on the floors. »
