Fired by the Lakers last summer, Darvin Ham did not remain without a post for long. Doc Rivers and Steve Kerr both sought to make him their first assistant. The former Lakers coach ultimately chose to return to Milwaukee, where he helped Mike Budenholzer and Bucks win the title in 2021.
In Las Vegasn Doc Rivers explained why recruiting Darvin Ham was one of his summer priorities.
“I've always liked him, and I don't want to go into detail about his ouster from the Lakers, but he's someone who has a personality that works with everyone, and it's great to have him with us.”
The Bucks coach then drew the parallel between Tyron Luewhich he started on the Celtics bench in 2011, and Darvin Ham. For him, they both have this ability to talk to players and gain their trust. An undeniable quality in a coaching staff.
“He reminds me a little of Ty (Lue). I remember when I took Ty to Boston, he had this ability to be frank, honest with the players. He could tell them the truth about their strengths and weaknesses without them getting upset, whereas if the same thing came from me, as a coach, it would surely be different. Darvin and Ty both have that credibility and ability to talk to players, and that's valuable as an assistant. »
