How to replace Marcus Smart next season? This is the question Derrick White is asking after the playmaker’s transfer to Memphis and the arrival of Kristaps Porzingis. The former Spurs believes that the mission promises to be complicated for the Celtics.
“This transfer is crazy”says Derrick White at NBC Sports. “I have a lot of love and respect (for him) and it was a privilege to play with Smart. You can’t replace Smart, which he does on both sides of the pitch. There is only one Marcus Smart, it is unique. He made up for a lot of the mistakes we made this season. There will be a big void to fill and everyone will have to get involved. He always pushed and motivated me to become better. I wish him the best in Memphis. »
This departure will obviously cause significant changes for the 2022 finalists. First, Derrick White knows that his role will evolve.
“We have a lot of players who can carry the ball and I will probably have to play more in the point guard position than this season. I can’t wait to have this opportunity. The coming summer will be important for me. »
Then, Kristaps Porzingis will upset the balance of the Celtics.
“I’m looking forward and excited to play with him. He is very talented. I remember a game in Washington where he was incredible. We couldn’t do anything (reference, no doubt, to March 28, with 32 points and 13 rebounds for the Latvian). He can do a lot of things on both sides of the court. I can’t wait to get to know him and welcome him to this team. »
