Because he would rather polish the bench of a winning team than play in a team at the bottom of the table, Derrick Rose warned that he would not ask to leave the Knicks. The former MVP was taken out of Tom Thibodeau’s rotation, and he is taking his troubles patiently. At 34, he knows that everything can go quickly and an injury to a playmaker, which he obviously does not want, would allow him to return to the field.
“I learn a simple lesson: always be there” he explains at The Athletic. “First of all, I really appreciate understanding my role. I’m not here to get a free pass, I’m not here to feel like I need minutes or anything like that. I’m just here to win and try to help young people. I never imagined being in this position. I never thought I would play so many years. I’m waiting for my chance, that’s for sure, but I can’t complain. I take advantage of it. I see it as a way to save my physique, and you never know during the playoffs if I was to be used. »
What Derrick Rose appreciates is that the current always passes with the staff. He has special ties with Tom Thibodeau, and he doesn’t feel left out.
“The team maintains communication with me. When they told me about it, I don’t think they wanted to transfer me. They know I still have a lot to do, and they love my connection and my relationship with all the players on the team. I’m not in the locker room trying to disrupt the mood with my attitude. I’ve had so many lives in the NBA that now I’m in a position where I can step back, teach the young guys, and if Thibs needs me, I can get back into rhythm and play the way I want. »
A unique story with Tom Thibodeau
It’s because Tom Thibodeau could need him at any time that Derrick Rose continues to train normally and stay in shape.
This is the hardest thing to do for a player out of rotation. But he is especially grateful to Tom Thibodeau for having always called on him, in Chicago, Minnesota and now New York.
“I think my story is unique, because I’m with a coach who allowed me to join him in any team he was in and he found a solution for me. I’m happy with my physical condition, and in this situation things can change quickly and I could play. Just like things had changed quickly when I wasn’t playing. I am always optimistic. As long as we win… If we didn’t win, I’d probably take a different approach, because I’m human. But as long as we win, that’s all I care about. »
The Knicks are winning so much that they have seven straight wins before hosting the Warriors tonight.
