A few days ago, the Denver Post assured that the Nuggets had not ruled out the possibility that Michael Porter Jr. will play again this season, following his lumbar surgery.
An option that now seems almost ruled out because The Athletic announces that the NBA has just granted a “Disabled Player Exception” to the Nuggets to replace the winger. This envelope is offered to franchises when an independent doctor has determined that the player in question will not be able to play again for the season…
In the case of Michael Porter Jr, this envelope therefore amounts to 2.7 million dollars, or half of the winger’s salary this season, his extension of 173 million dollars not starting until next year.
The Colorado franchise has until March 10 to use this “Disabled Player Exception”.
The Denver Nuggets have been granted a disabled player exception worth $2.7 million for the loss of Michael Porter Jr., sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. DPE is granted for players deemed to be out for the season. Deadline to use the ECD is March 10.

Disabled Player Exception : when a franchise loses a player for a long period, it can ask the NBA to take advantage of an additional envelope to recruit a player. This “derogation”, granted after a study of the medical file, makes it possible not to count the salary of the injured player, and to offer a contract to his replacement for an amount equal to 50% of the salary of the injured player. With this envelope, you can sign a free player or a player on the cut list, but also make a transfer. The duration of the contract of the player acquired by this exception cannot exceed one year, and with this envelope, only one player can be acquired.
