Even without Franz Wagner, we were treated to a superb opposition between Germany and Australia.
Driven by Dennis Schröder’s 30 points in the five majors and Maodo Lo’s 20 points off the bench, it was the Mannschaft who won (85-82) after a tense “money-time” and who will do the talking…
Because Josh Giddey, uncomfortable a good part of the meeting, had found some pep to allow the Boomers to equalize (81-81) in the last two minutes. Patty Mills had the chance to put Australia in front again but the ball slipped from the veteran’s fingers. In the process, Dennis Schröder allowed his team to regain the advantage (83-81) by sneaking cleverly to the circle.
Josh Giddey cleverly caused a foul from Daniel Theis but missed one of his two shots (83-82) then he had to go out to stop a bleeding, and could not return to the field right away.
It was therefore Patty Mills who inherited the ball but the future Hawks player lost the ball a second time.
No whistle for Josh Giddey
With the Aussies going all out, Maodo Lo layup to give his team a three-point lead (85-82) and Josh Giddey had one last chance to equalise. Clever, the Oklahoma City leader shot from midfield against a Daniel Theis who took a lot of risks by trying to hinder his shot.
Fortunately for Germany, the referees chose not to whistle and the Mannschaft won a second victory (85-82) in this World Cup, Australia cursing for its part against the referees.
On the Boomers side, the limits of the interior sector with the injury of Jock Landale may still be a problem, while Dennis Schröder and Maodo Lo were able to attack the “switches” as soon as they had the opportunity.
Next meeting Tuesday for Germany (09:30), for its last match of this “group of death” against Finland. Australia will challenge Japan on the same day (1:10 p.m.) for a possibly life-and-death match…
