DeMar DeRozan's final year of Kings contract partially guaranteed

Arriving rather “late” in Sacramento in this “free agency”, DeMar DeRozan probably had to make some concessions with regard to what he could have hoped to receive for a time.

ESPN's star insider Adrian Wojnarowski revealed Monday the details of DeMar DeRozan's new contract with the Kings, via a “sign-and-trade” with Chicago. And little surprise, if it is indeed as mentioned Saturday night at $74 million over three years (73.7 to be precise), the last year of this lease is only partially guaranteed. The former Toronto or San Antonio player could be cut before his third year for a check of ten million dollars.

Coming off a three-year, $82 million contract with the Bulls, and with the salary cap rising, the winger could have received around “90 million” over three years ESPN salary cap expert and former Nets executive Bobby Marks said in mid-June. DeMar DeRozan had also been the subject from an offer from Chicago last seasonat $40 million per year for two seasons, which the player had refused, hoping to be able to extend for longer.

Ultimately, DeMar DeRozan will get less money, and could well stay only two years with the Kings, thus limiting the potential “risk” in case of failure of his association with De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis in California. This $73.7 million is however still more than the “mid-level exception”, $13 million per season, offered by several franchises like the Lakers, assured Bleacher Report.
