Davis Bertans agrees to remove a clause from his contract

The Thunder reached an agreement with Davis Bertans on an amendment to his contract. It is Michael Scotto who revealed the maneuver, explaining that the Thunder had received the approval of its shooter to delete one of the clauses of the contract binding the two parties.

This indeed included a rather special condition: Davis Bertans had the possibility of validating his last year of contract at 16 million dollars, subject to playing 75% of the regular season matches. This subtlety was negotiated when the winger, often hampered by injuries, played for the Wizards, and it must be remembered that the Thunder had recovered him this year solely for financial reasons.

An interesting change for a possible transfer?

As Davis Bertans is not in Mark Daigneault's rotation, having played only 5 of Oklahoma City's first 17 games since the restart, the clause had little chance of being activated at the end of the season.

With this change, the Latvian knows he won't make $16 million next season, but he no longer has to worry about his number of games (and perhaps he will now be able to fully integrate into the rotation of the Thunder…). To make things easier, the Thunder offered him a slight increase of $250,000 on the guaranteed amount of his last year of contract, which went from $5 to $5.25 million.

This solution allows the Thunder to have a little more flexibility for 2024/25, without worrying about whether or not to play their shooter. It is also reassuring for teams possibly interested in Davis Bertans, since they know that he will receive a maximum of 5.25 million dollars next season, and not 16.

This modification has no impact on this 2023/24 season, and the Latvian will indeed receive 17 million dollars, regardless of the number of matches in which he has participated.
