Dallas to part ways with JaVale McGee

The Mavericks still have 18 players under contract and must therefore refine their roster between now and the restart and they should start by parting ways with JaVale McGee according to Mark Stein. The Texas franchise should cut its 35-year-old pivot via the “ stretch provision and thus spread the remainder of his contract ($11.7 million) over five years. That is about 2.3 million dollars per year.

Dallas has until August 31 to do so but before that, they will try to find him a base. Triple NBA champion, McGee will only have stayed one year at the Mavs and should therefore find himself a free agent.

In the aftermath, The Athletic announced that the Mavericks should extend Markieff Morris, but his contract year would only be partially guaranteed.

Stretch provision : measure that allows a franchise to cut a player and spread the rest of his salary over several seasons to avoid filling his salary cap over a single season.
