Absent from the NBA courts for several years, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist resurfaced in the news.
Several American media indeed relay his intention to sue an insurer who refused to cover his heart disease linked to Covid.
The person concerned had been diagnosed with myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) linked to Covid and had experienced acute chest pain in December 2020. He was then advised not to play basketball. Despite an attempted return to the Knicks, the former Hornets player has not played in the Big League since.
A career ended at 26
Now, the former Kentucky star is suing his insurance company over denial of coverage. According to his lawyer, Jason Morrin, he submitted a claim for compensation to Lloyd’s of London ” due to permanent total disability resulting from illness”. According to his representative, the insurance provided coverage if Michael Kidd-Gilchrist could not sue “ his activity as a professional basketball player “.
The company would thus “ refused to fully insure the damages for which the plaintiff requested coverage “. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was just 26 years old when he last appeared in the NBA, and he said he felt symptoms of his heart problem last June. He is asking for $40 million.
His decision was notably commented on by the American football player Justin Pugh who explained that he had never called on Lloyd’s of London, a British company therefore, evoking a “ logistical nightmare “.
