Controversy over Orlando Magic donation to Florida governor

The timing is going very badly for the league’s players’ union. The Orlando Magic donated $50,000 to Florida Governor Ron De Santis to support the launch of his presidential campaign. This donation was only made official recently, days after extremist statements by Ron DeSantis about the supposed “beneficial” role of slavery for exploited and disenfranchised workers. A qualified position of ” lie “ by Vice President Kamala Harris, and which, however, should now be taught in schools in the State of Florida!

His statements did not fail to react throughout the country, and the players’ union added a layer, believing that this support displayed with something to alarm the players, “in view of recent comments and the policy of its beneficiary”.

“NBA owners, players and staff have the right to express their personal political views, including through donations and statements. However, if contributions are made on behalf of an entire team, using money earned through the work of its employees, it is the responsibility of team owners to take into account the diverse values and perspectives of staff and players. », said the NBPA before recalling that the gift of the Magic did not represent the support of the players for Ron DeSantis.

The first to react was Larry Nance Jr, who was surprised on his social networks that the leaders of a franchise like Orlando ” decided it was a good idea to support a man who claims slavery had personal benefits for slaves” with ” a predominantly black workforce, a black coach and a black GM”.

The owner of the Magic is close to the Trump camp

For its part, the NBA has clarified that the owners are free to choose their political decisions and contributions. As a reminder, the DeVos family, owners of the Magic since 1991, are very close to Republican circles in the State of Florida, and even to the Trump camp since the sister-in-law of the current owner of the Magic was Secretary of State for the education from 2017 to 2021 under former President Donald Trump.

Finally, the Magic defended itself by explaining that this donation dated from May, and that it predated DeSantis’ pro-slavery statements: “To clarify, this donation was given before Governor DeSantis entered the presidential race. It was made as a Florida business in support of the Governor of Florida for the continued prosperity of Central Florida. »
