Chris Paul: “Victor Wembanyama is different from anyone I have played with”

Tonight, in Utah, Chris Paul signed his first double-double with the Spurs: 19 points and 10 assists without losing a single ball. It was he who took the match into his own hands in the second half, whether at the start of the 3rd quarter to regain the score or at the start of the 4th to widen the gap.

“He really took charge of the match and it paid off”confirms Victor Wembanyama. “And that’s no coincidence. He saw what they were trying to do in the first half and anticipated their adjustments so we could finish them off in the half. I think he understood that at that point we needed him to score points, and that's what he did. »

“I have never made a screen for a player over 2m10”

After three matches, the former Warriors leader was struggling at 7.3 points and 6.7 assists in 28 minutes. By trying too hard to play with “Wemby”, he had forgotten to attack his defender and be a threat.

“It was done, I played a few matches, and I said to Victor: 'Let me help you too'. Because we ask a lot of him” estimates the third best passer in history. Even though he is entering his 20th season, Chris Paul had never played with such a profile, and it requires, for him too, a period of adjustments.

“I’m still figuring it out. We are still learning to play with each other,” recognizes Chris Paul about his automatisms with the Frenchman. “He’s different from everyone I’ve played with, so it’s not easy to do this or that. I've never seen a player that size dribble behind the back, and I've never screened a player taller than 2m10. So I continue to learn on the job.”
