Chet Holmgren still has a lot of boxes to tick

A wiry interior with the ability to stray, Chet Holmgren has a little Kevin Garnett side to him, especially considering he was born in Minneapolis in 2002, when KG was at the height of his career with Wolves.

For the “KG Certified” section hosted by the former NBA champion, with the Celtics, Chet Holmgren took stock of the challenges of his next few months, after having done quite well in the Summer League with 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists on average over two small games.

Victim of a ligament rupture in the midfoot of his right foot last summer, he is ready to begin his rookie season with still many elements to rediscover and with which he will have to reacclimatize, all within one of the youngest squads in the league. An exciting challenge, as long as the body holds out.

“The main objective is to help us win games. We have a young team, so we will have to work hard to achieve this. It’s going to take a bit of rehearsal and matches to better understand how I can adapt to the guys and vice versa. I’m going to have to find my shooting touch again… Taking shots in a match after not having done so for a year is really different. I’m going to have to get used to all these things again, and then continue to evolve over the season, once the scouts identify me… What the teams will let me do or prevent me from doing is going to change so, I should adjust to all that ”, he confided.

“There will be ups and downs, all rookies go through this”

Although he has witnessed his exploits throughout the past season from the bench, he will also have to learn to evolve alongside the team’s “franchise player”, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. It will even be one of the major challenges of the coming season: to ensure that the two can shine without stepping on each other’s toes.

“With SGA, it will make my job easier. To play with someone who has this talent, these abilities, is huge. The five guys on the opposing team will have to worry about him, so it will open up opportunities for me and my teammates. He’s a good guy too, so it’s going to be fun.”he added.

The apprehensions will also be mental, and for that, Chet Holmgren will be able to count on the experience of his white season to be better prepared for what awaits him, because there will not only be victories but also defeats, failures and disappointments from which he will have to learn to recover.

“Summers are the time when I progress the most. With the injury, I feel like I had an extended off-season, so nothing has really changed in my daily life. I have my plan in front of me and I stick to it, making sure I work on the things I need to work on. There will be ups and downs, all rookies go through this, even the good veterans. We will have to stay the course, and hope that my game speaks for itself”.

For the rest, he now knows that he can count on the support and advice of Kevin Garnett, who offered to help him if he felt the need. “We have to train together” replied the kid.

Appointment is already made in Minneapolis while waiting for the start of the training camp.
