Chauncey Billups will always support Damian Lillard

Chauncey Billups would undoubtedly have liked to start his third season at the head of the Blazers in a different atmosphere. But almost three months after the trade request from Damian Lillard, the situation still seems frozen in Oregon. So much so that almost two weeks before the resumption, the Portland workforce remains under threat of a “blockbuster deal” which could considerably reshape the “roster”.

During a recent gathering of members of the NBA coaches union in Chicago, the Portland coach acknowledged that the situation was not ideal, but that he was going to do his best, particularly to develop the young nuggets of the franchise.

“It’s obviously destabilizing, it’s difficult. But for me, all I can do is give the best of myself with those who are there”, did he declare. “I don’t know how it’s going to go. I can’t do anything to control it. But I know who is on our team right now and who I worked with this summer. I am very enthusiastic. All I can do is focus on my players. And see what happens. I’m thrilled with Shaedon Sharpe’s progress. I’m looking forward to coaching Scoot Henderson and Anfernee Simons. How do we know what will happen with Lady? Everyone knows what I think of Dame and the opportunity I have to train her. We will see. I don’t know what will happen, but I will be ready to do my best.”

Exemplary behavior for eleven years

The Portland coach also reaffirmed his support for the All-Star leader in his desire to leave the franchise. He believes that Damian Lillard’s ethics and professionalism towards the franchise and its fans over 11 years legitimately offer him an exit with honors.

“Dame was amazing. For Portland fans, for our franchise. He has never been negative towards anyone in our franchise. Lady is an upright man. He was professional throughout his career. It’s the business aspect that is at stake. I don’t think there is any pressure from one side or the other.”he added.

The separation certainly promises to be painful but Chauncey Billups, a former leading leader in his time, also understands the situation of the player, who now aspires to other ambitions.

“He is at a crossroads in his career and he is doing what he thinks is best for him and his family. I will always support him”he concluded.
