Brook Lopez wins Community Assist Award for his work supporting youth literacy

After Devin Booker then Gary Payton II, it is Brook Lopez who receives this year the “Community Assist Award”, now accompanied by the name of the late Bob Lanier, who was very involved in humanitarian and social work.

The pivot of the Bucks, “free agent” this summer, is rewarded “for his continued commitment to supporting youth literacy in Milwaukee”. Since joining the Bucks in 2018, Brook Lopez has been on a mission to make reading fun and accessible. Throughout the season, he contributed approximately $235,000 to purchase books and fund literacy initiatives in Milwaukee.

As part of its “Blocks for Books” program, Brook Lopez donates $500 to the “Next Door” association for each block he makes during the regular season in order to support children’s literacy. This season, he has donated $96,500 through this program. Additionally, he has also partnered with Scholastic Book Fair to organize book fairs at five public schools in Milwaukee. Each student in the five schools was thus able to choose and keep five books, making a total of nearly 10,000 books.

“Reading is a personal passion that brings me joy and has been key to my success”, reacted Brook Lopez. “Throughout my career, I have been committed to supporting youth literacy initiatives because I know how important this skill is. Whether at home, in the locker room or on the road, reading has always played an important role in my life. I want to make sure that future generations can also develop this skill and fall in love with reading like I did, especially children in economically disadvantaged schools and communities. It is truly an honor to receive the Bob Lanier Community Assist Award for my efforts to support youth literacy in Milwaukee. Bob Lanier was passionate about serving the Milwaukee community, and being able to bring this award back to Milwaukee means a lot to me and to the franchise. »
