Blazers at Moda Center until 2030

There was an urgent need in Portland for the city hall and the Blazers to agree on a lease extension allowing the Oregon franchise to continue to play at the Moda Center, while the end of the current contract will end at the end of the 2024/25 season.

This Wednesday, the municipal council will thus enact the extension agreement between the two parties for a period of five years, until 2029/30, with the possibility of extending for five more years, until 2034/35.

This transitional agreement, beneficial for everyone in the short term, will however allow the Blazers to maintain pressure on the city with a view to obtaining a renovation of the Moda Center, which would be financed by both parties. Without which, the threat of a move could resurface. It will also be a question of revitalizing the “Rose Quarter” where the Moda Center is located.

“The Trail Blazers and Rip City are a key part of who we are as a community, a source of pride and identity in Portland and throughout Oregon.”, said Dewayne Hankinspresident of business operations for the Blazers and Rip City Management. “This is an important step toward a long-term public-private partnership that will help revitalize the Rose Quarter and ensure the Trail Blazers remain a part of Portland for years to come.”

Opened almost 28 years ago, the Moda Center is currently the “oldest” arena in the NBA, and it would therefore urgently need a facelift to be able to compete with the other arenas in the league.
