Blacklisted in Sweden, Jonas Jerebko regrets having signed in Russia

Like Thomas Heurtel last year or Amath M’Baye recently, Jonas Jerebko made the choice to join a Russian team during the conflict against Ukraine, and he is paying the consequences in terms of the national team. It was March 2022, a month after the start of the Russian invasion, and the former Pistons and Jazz winger had been suspended by his federation in the process. One of his sponsors had also dropped him. Arrived there to finish the season, the Swede had only stayed there for a few weeks, and since then he has never seen the grounds again, whether in club or selection. At 36, he plans to continue playing.

“I haven’t played basketball in a year and a half, and I feel like I won’t have any more offers” does he notice Reuters. “I had received an offer from CSKA, and I had accepted it. At that time, I was only thinking about basketball, and it went badly. I regret it today, and if I could go back, I wouldn’t have done it. »

The Swedish winger assures him, he did not go to Russia for the money. He had already played there, and it was for a “freelance” at the end of the season.

“I have been a professional since the age of 18, and I played two months at CSKA. Did money play a role? Absolutely not ! » he answers. “I had in mind to try to play again in the NBA, and since I had no offer, I took this one. At the same time, I don’t blame anyone. It’s me I want. It was my fault. As we make our bed, we go to bed… We all make mistakes, we are all human. »

“He had been informed of the consequences”

What Jerebko does not understand is why he remains “blacklisted” when his experience was short, and he left on his own in June. “It’s sad but I understand their decision. But it’s hard to have had no contact for a year and a half, and to get no response. I contacted them in November. I have contacted them through social media, but have not yet received any response”.

On the side of the Federation, we assure that the door remains open to discussions, especially if he has regrets. “It is not something he told us, either at the start of the contract and when he was informed of the consequences, or during a meeting he had with our president Susanne Jidesten in March. 2023 »assures Fredrik Joulamo, secretary general of the federation. “For the rest, we will not communicate with Jonas through the media. He knows how to reach us and we are happy to make ourselves available for a conversation with him, as we have done throughout this process”.
