Pivot of 19 years and 2m16 for 104 kg, Derek Lively II spent only a short year on the benches of Duke, for a very discreet production of 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. A pure “one and done”…
But his potential as a defensive and intimidating pivot, a profile that Dallas clearly lacked last year, caught the eye of the Mavs who picked him up as the 12th choice of the last Draft, after a trade with Oklahoma City.
“I see myself in him, it’s pretty crazy”
Raw talent, Derek Lively II falls into an ideal situation for him in Dallas, with a first choice mentor in the person of Tyson Chandler, like him landed (too) early and (too) young and frail in the NBA.
“I see myself in him, it’s pretty crazy honestly”blows Tyson Chandler on the Mavs website. “I see it and I remember that I was at the same stage. He has the whole future ahead of him. I want him to be better than me and that’s why I teach him things that I learned late, to try to speed up his learning. But I see a lot of good things. I love his attitude, he wants to learn. He has a good mindset and he works hard. He is also a very good teammate. »
Author of a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks) in the victory over the Warriors on Wednesday, Dereck Lively II shows good things in Las Vegas. But the work has only just begun…
“To be able to learn from a player of his caliber, and who knows so much about the work of the position 5, it is such an advantage for me. He’s probably tired of me asking him so many questions…”
“He takes risks and he is already talking, which is a very good sign”
Capable of going to scrape rebounds in attack, an Achilles heel of the Mavs for several seasons, Derek Lively II also offers his deterrent qualities to the circle, just like a huge target for alley-oops out of pick & roll. However, we know how much Luka Doncic appreciates these situations…
“He has so much untapped potential yet,” continues Tyson Chandler. “He still plays only on instinct and talent. He still has a lot, a lot to learn. But he has all the tools to become a great player. For the moment, he assimilates a lot of information and he tries a bit of everything. But what I appreciate is that he’s not afraid to make mistakes or say the wrong thing. He takes risks and he is already talking, which is a very good sign. He needs to work but he is making the effort and he already has the intensity. »
Adding size, literally, to the Mavs, Derek Lively II must nevertheless toughen up by the start of his rookie campaign next October. His screen poses are in this case too soft and, to tell the truth, ineffective at the present time. But “Uncle Tyson” is there to correct that!
“He sometimes comes to stop the exercises in training to show him how to move his feet on the pick & roll, where to stand to get the lobs on both sides, where to have the right timing. These are things that I cannot teach him,” acknowledges Jared Dudley. ” [Tyson] is a [ancien] best defender of the year, that’s why we give him full freedom to do what he wants. We are lucky to have him with us. »
