In about two months, Cam Johnson will put on the “Team USA” jersey. The Nets player signed up two weeks ago with the American team to play in the next World Cup. However, he could have ended up with another jersey on the international scene, that of Croatia.
The Croatian media Sportske, picked up by BasketNews, indeed notes that the mother of the former Suns player has Croatian roots, which could have allowed him to represent the Balkan nation. Dario Saric, his former teammate at Phoenix, reportedly tried to persuade him during the season to choose Croatia as his base. In vain.
His naturalization would obviously have been a reinforcement of choice for the 25th basketball nation in the world, which is losing ground on the best nations in the world despite some well-known figures (Dario Saric therefore, Bojan Bogdanovic, Ivica Zubac, Mario Hezonja…).
Eliminated in the round of 16 of the last Euro, Croatia are currently participating in the pre-qualifiers for EuroBasket 2025 after missing the wagon for the 2023 World Cup. The Croats had not even passed the first qualifying round, finishing last in their group behind Finland, Slovenia and Sweden.
