At the end of May 2021, the Zamalek Sporting Club, based in Egypt and led by the former glory of the French championship Souleyman Diabaté, won the first final of the BAL (Basketball Africa League) by winning 76-63 against the US Monastir (Tunisia) to Kigali (Rwanda).
The qualifying phases for the next edition being closed, the BAL program is now known. It will concern 12 teams (including the defending champion) which will be divided into two conferences (Sahara and Nil).
Each conference will play a 15-game group stage, in which each team will play the other five from its conference once. The Sahara Conference group stage will take place at the Dakar Arena from March 5-15, and the Nile Conference at the Hassan Mostafa Indoor Sports Complex in Cairo from April 9-19.
The top four teams from each conference will qualify for the finals which will take place at the Kigali Arena from May 21-28.
“We are very happy to welcome seven new teams and four new countries for the second season of the BAL”, said the president of the BAL, Amadou Gallo Fall. “Reigning champion Zamalek will set the tone for the five returning teams, having represented BAL at the FIBA Intercontinental Cup held this month in Cairo. The competition to bring home the BAL 2022 trophy is heating up, and we are delighted that many fans will be able to watch the games live in three world-famous African cities.
