The NBA multiplied the big announcements last summer following the death of Bill Russell, left on July 31 at the age of 88. Among them, there was in particular the withdrawal of number 6 from all franchises. Even if the players who wore number 6 before this decision, including LeBron James, had the right to keep it.
But as we approach the first anniversary of the Celtics legend’s death, LeBron James took the lead in announcing, via his agent, Rich Paul, that he would take over number 23 from next season. A way to show respect to the late Bill Russell, the most successful player in league history…
“It’s LeBron’s decision. He chose to do this out of respect for Bill Russell.” simply said Rich Paul.
Between the 6th and the 23rd
Last September, on the sidelines of the start of Lakers training camp, LeBron James had already hinted at the possibility of changing his number again to abandon 6 for good.
Arrived in the NBA in Cleveland with the 23 on his back, he started wearing the number 6 in Miami in 2010, the Heat having removed the 23 from Michael Jordan (even if “His Airness” never played in Florida…) . LeBron James then took over 23 when he arrived at the Lakers before switching back to 6 since the start of the 2021 season.
“Losing such an icon was heartbreaking for all of us. I mean, no matter if you play, watch or be part of this game, we all know what Bill Russell meant to us. We all know what Bill Russell meant to the NBA, obviously to the Celtics off the court, in terms of his heroism…and what he meant to the black community, being able to talk about things that aren’t simple. I don’t know if I’ll keep doing it, but for now, I’ll wear his number in his honor. It means a lot to me”he said.
He will therefore find number 23 at the start of the school year, for the 15th time in 21 seasons.
