Atlanta: four more years for Onyeka Okongwu

Unlike his teammate Saddiq Bey, also from the 2020 Draft class, Onyeka Okongwu has received and accepted an extension offer from the Hawks. This amounts to $62 million over four years.

The agreement rewards the continued progression of the 22-year-old American-Nigerian interior, capable of playing both interior positions. Clint Capela’s understudy, Okongwu is an “energizer” coming off the bench, and he brings rebound, defense and toughness. His stats have been constantly improving for three years, and the good news is that his physique held up last season with 80 matches played, compared to 50 and 48 during the first two seasons.

Determined to equip himself with an outside shot for the years to come, he showed himself in preseason with an 18-point game at 8/10 shooting, 6 rebounds, 2 assists in 25 minutes against the Pelicans.
