Assistant Phil Handy bids farewell to Lakers

Who says change of coach says change of staff. At the Lakers, the arrival of JJ Redick has necessarily shaken up the coaching staff, and Phil Handy was not retained by the new head coach.

It was on Instagram that this close friend of LeBron James, now 53 years old, decided to say goodbye to the “Purple & Gold” franchise, he who had returned there in 2019, after having started there between 2011 and 2013, before joining the Cavaliers between 2013 and 2018, then having spent a year with the Raptors, between 2018 and 2019.

Between Cleveland, Toronto and Los Angeles, they had participated in six consecutive Finals, between 2015 and 2020, with three titles to their name over the period (2016, 2019 and 2020).

“Laker Nation, I owe you a long time… Five years and you guys have supported me from start to finish. The amount of love the Lakeshow fans have shown me over the years has been unreal! I will forever be grateful for the support you have given me. We made it in 2020 and have tried every year to reach the top. The business of basketball isn’t always easy or fair but you all know what I stand for when it comes to the game and all the players I’ve worked with…” he writes thus.

Much appreciated by the players, the message from Phil Handy, who dreamed of taking over the management of the team after the dismissal of Frank Vogel, was thus commented on by Austin Reaves and Jarred Vanderbilt while LeBron James liked it.
