While the extension ofImmanuel Quickley seemed to be a formality, New York’s sixth man has so far still not signed anything, the deadline to do so being set for October 23.
The former Kentucky player, now 24 years old, is preparing to enter the final year of his rookie contract and, if he is not re-signed by the Knicks, he will be a “protected free agent” next summer, which means the “Big Apple” franchise will have control over its future anyway.
But why has Immanuel Quickley, eligible for a contract extension for three months, still not been locked by his club? The Athletic, however, assures that “optimism” is still there.
New York fishing for very big fish?
The problem may be that the small world of the NBA expects a few transfer requests from superstars in the months to come. The futures of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid Or Donovan Mitchell are thus vague, and this is perhaps particularly why Miami does not rush on Damian Lillard.
In New York, that’s perhaps also why we’re playing for time with Immanuel Quickley. Because if a superstar requests his transfer by the “trade deadline”, the figures change depending on whether the point guard/back has been extended or not. And this even if its extension would start for the 2024/25 season…
Indeed, to avoid a young player being exchanged “at a discount”, the amount of his exchangeable contract, when he enters the last year of his rookie contract and it has been extended, is calculated by smoothing the end of his current contract and his future contract. Enough to complicate things if Immanuel Quickley were to be part of a future offer from New York, which knows this problem well since the extension of RJ Barrett (and the “poison pill” which accompanied it) had already disrupted the negotiations around by Donovan Mitchell last year.
