With the WNBA season running from mid-April to October, many players travel to Europe to play during the offseason. A practice that could significantly decrease for a handful of them, such as Angel Reese who will join the new 3×3 league, Unrivaled.
Created by Olympic champions Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, Unrivaled aims to establish itself as a second season in the women's basketball calendar. Above all, the new league intends to offer its 30 players the “highest average salary in the history of women's professional sports leagues” thanks to its investors (Carmelo Anthony, Steve Nash, Megan Rapinoe, etc.) and its partners.
Thus, Angel Reese, the new queen of the “double-double”, will join the league for her first season which will begin in January 2025 in Miami. And this, for a salary of 250,000 dollars.
Three more rookies will join Unrivaled
“Being able to be in Miami from January to March, without having to go abroad”, Reese answers about his motivations. “Nobody wants to go overseas. A lot of us never want to have to go overseas, but some people unfortunately have to go overseas, so it’s about being able to make six figures in three months, being housed in Miami, and just getting ahead.”
Joining Unrivaled will also be an opportunity for Angel Reese to discover a competition format other than 5 on 5.
“It's incredible to have two great players starting something,” she continues. “3-on-3 is something I enjoy doing, and even though I haven’t been able to play competitively I think I can work on some of my individual skills. So I’m really excited for that.”
In addition to Angel Reese, other WNBA stars who have already decided to commit to the 3×3 league include Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Rhyne Howard, Kahleah Copper, Jackie Young, and Dearica Hamby. In a tweetCollier also said that three other rookies are expected to be part of the league. It remains to be seen whether Caitlin Clark will be one of them…
