Andre Drummond persists and signs: “I am the best rebounder in history”

Since leaving Detroit during the 2019/20 season, Andrew Drummond travels a lot – Cleveland, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Chicago – but also compiles fewer big statistics. There remains one constant, whether his playing time is significant or not: rebounding.

When you look at his numbers over 36 minutes, year after year, they remain impressive. Last season, with the Bulls, he only played 17 minutes on average, enough to average 9 rebounds!

“That’s what I’m here for. I am the best rebounder in history. I'm here to do one job: help the team win.”, ensures the pivotwho had already said this in 2019, and does not hesitate to repeat it. “You want me to say it again, to record it?” I am the best rebounder in history. »

If he is far from the best in history, in total (33rd) or on average (14th), Andre Drummond still remains a reference in recent years. The proof: he is the only active player to be part of the Top 20 in averages (12.4 rebounds per game), with Rudy Gobert (11.8), far behind number one: Wilt Chamberlain and his 22.9 shots per game.

A good example for young people

So this is quite naturally what he will teach the young Sixers. “I’m here to be a veteran for the kids, help them grow, and take some pressure off Joel Embiid.”he specifies. Among those he will take under his wing is Adem Bona, a 21-year-old interior drafted in the second round in 2024.

“I’m proud of that. When I arrived, I took him aside to tell him that I wasn't there to tell him what to do or change his game, but if he needs any advice, he should ask me.” says the former Detroiter, four-time best rebounder in the league (2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020). “He did it very well by asking me what I thought about a certain situation, or even my placement on the rebound. Since day one, we have been very close. »

The best way for Andre Drummond to transmit his rebounding art is still to “see it up close, live”he smiles. “For a player like Bona, who will take on my role later in his career, I am a good example to follow. »
