As early as the end of last March, the question of an extension this summer was raised. At the time, the Knicks Tom Thibodeau were moving towards direct qualification for the playoffs. Two and a half months later, the New Yorkers are squarely on the doorstep of the conference final.
This thickens the coach's file, with a view to extending his lease in New York. According to Shams CharaniaTom Thibodeau could be offered an offer, over several years, to the tune of $10 million per year.
For the insider of The Athletic, there is no question for New York of leaving the coach in uncertainty next season, his last year of contract. Negotiations should therefore take place during the offseason, because the Knicks are planning for the long term with their technician, in office since 2020.
In addition to the good playoff campaign in progress, the increase in the salary level of coach of the year 2011 and 2021 should be correlated to the recent contracts and extensions granted – with a clear upward trend – to Monty Williams (13 million dollars per season), Gregg Popovich (16), Steve Kerr (17.5) or Erik Spoelstra (15).
Tom Thibodeau currently earns around 7 million annually. Arriving in New York after a mixed experience as coach/GM with the Wolves, he has a record of 175 wins for 143 losses (55% win) with the Knicks. And three playoff qualifications in four seasons.
