First Dominican basketball player to win the NBA title, Al Horford is currently back in his native country, accompanied in particular by his coach, Joe Mazzulla, and the Larry O'Brien trophy.
“It was very important for me to come to the Dominican Republic to celebrate this victory with my family, friends and loved ones in my home country. This victory is also that of my country”he explained. “I hope to inspire future athletes by showing them that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.”
While he has no immediate plans to retire, the 38-year-old center has now accomplished everything he could have hoped for in his career, with two NCAA titles (2006 and 2007) with Florida and an NBA title.
In the Dominican Republic, we are very proud of the career of Tito Horford's son, and President Luis Abinader has just knighted him of the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella, the highest honorary distinction of the Dominican Republic, awarded for “service rendered to the nation”.
“I knew I was going to meet the president, but I didn't know I was going to receive the country's highest honor”reacted Al Horford. “It's very special for me, very special for my family. I feel very proud right now. I'm really overwhelmed with a lot of emotion. It's a very, very special day for me.”
“I feel very proud right now.”
