After Russian Prison, Brittney Griner Relishes Representing the United States Again

Brittney Griner is about to realize a dream. That of participating in the Olympic Games again and fighting for a third gold medal, in Paris. A dream that seemed so far away two years ago, when she spent nine months in Russian prisons, in particularly difficult conditions.

For the first time in more than a year and a half, she is preparing to play basketball outside of the United States.

“Honestly, it means the world to me.”, recognizes Brittney Griner. “To now have the honor of wearing the American jersey again and potentially winning gold is the icing on the cake.”

A prospect which, at 33 years old, should bring its share of emotions.

“I hope everything goes as we wish and that this anthem will be played”she explains about this potential American victory. “This time it’s going to be much more emotional for me.”

Especially since Brittney Griner left her wife Cherelle and their son Bash, born on July 8, in the United States to participate in the Olympic tournament. The Phoenix Mercury player is also a symbol.

“It's incredible when you think about it. Leaving aside the Olympics, when you think about her personal experience, what she has experienced and continues to experience,” This is what the United States coach Cheryl Reeve concluded. “We were all thinking about BG when she was there, we didn’t know if this moment would be possible. I’m thrilled for her personally and thrilled for our basketball team.”
