It had been rustling for months and ESPN announces that it is (almost) closed : Michael Jordan will sell the Hornets to Gabe Plotkin, minority shareholder of the franchise, as well as Rick Schnall, minority shareholder in the Atlanta Hawks, who will therefore take control of the club. Michael Jordan could remain in a minority position.
It is therefore the end of a 13-year adventure since Michael Jordan took control of the Charlotte Bobcats in 2010. An extremely mixed adventure for “His Airness” because the club ultimately only had two playoff campaigns on the period, for two eliminations in the first round of the playoffs.
Financially, however, it’s quite a deal because Michael Jordan paid “only” $275 million to become the club’s majority shareholder in 2010. According to the latest estimates, the Charlotte Hornets are now valued at 1.8 billion dollars and it will therefore make a very nice capital gain.
For Charlotte, it’s a change of era as the club prepares for a particularly important summer, the Draft where the team has a lot of choices (2, 27, 34, 39 and 41) as well as the “free agency” since we will have to choose what to do with PJ Washington and especially with Miles Bridges…
