If the NBA suspended Ja Morant for the first 25 games of the next season after his slip on Instagram, where he had shown a gun for the second time in a few months, the leader of the Grizzlies must also face American justice following the complaint of Joshua Holloway, a teenager from Memphis.
This 17-year-old basketball player accused the All-Star of having hit him a dozen times, following a basketball game at Ja Morant’s home last summer. The latter had responded with another complaint, ensuring that Joshua Holloway had threatened him while accusing him of defamation for having brought out the complaint in the press.
The criminal aspect of the case is now closed, the justice system not having enough evidence to prosecute Ja Morant.
On the other hand, the civil aspect, and therefore the financial compensation claimed by Joshua Holloway, is still open, the lawyers of the leader of the Grizzlies seeking to have this request canceled.
For this, Ja Morant intends to rely on the “Stand-your-ground law”, in place in Tennessee. According to this law, very controversial, a person can thus respond by using force if they feel in danger at home. This is therefore the argument of Ja Morant, who confirmed having hit the teenager, but because the latter had swung the ball in the direction of his face and then approached him in a “threatening” way.
For Rebecca Adelman, Joshua Holloway’s lawyer, the use of “Stand-your-ground law” at this stage of the procedure is a desperate attempt on the part of the Morant camp, “Ave Maria of Ave Marias”. Nevertheless, the judge in charge of the complaint decided to continue listening to the arguments, which would offer immunity to Ja Morant.
