A WNBA franchise in Boston?

The WNBA is popular with NBA franchises. After the announcement of the creation of a new franchise in San Francisco, we learned that Boston would be in the running to become the next city to integrate the women’s league. This should precisely announce a new creation of franchise, which would therefore be expected rather in the East.

While Toronto seemed to hold the rope so far, Wyc Grousbeck, majority owner of the Celtics, suggested that Boston would also be in the mix.

“There are ongoing discussions,” he confided about the potential arrival of a WNBA franchise in Boston. “Be careful, but I’m not sure. I heard a few low masses.”

The problem of the room

The creation of a franchise in Boston, on the grounds of a historic NBA team with 17 championship titles, would be another big blow for the WNBA.

If they had been reluctant to take the plunge so far, the C’s managers would have changed their mind, believing that there was a market in Boston for high-level women’s basketball.

There remains one detail to be resolved: the obligation to own the room in which this new team would play. However, the Celtics do not own TD Garden. “I’ve been open to this idea from the beginning, except it doesn’t work as well if you don’t own the room”added Wyc Grousbeck.

For the moment, five WNBA franchises are linked to NBA franchises: the Indiana Fever (Indiana Pacers), the New York Liberty (Brooklyn Nets), the Washington Mystics (Washington Wizards), the Phoenix Mercury (Phoenix Suns) and the Minnesota Lynx (Minnesota Timberwolves). The Warriors will join this quintet from 2025.
