A very open bench in Denver

For several years, the bench was the Nuggets’ recurring problem. Michael Malone couldn’t really count on his replacements to hold up when he had to do without his starters, and especially Nikola Jokic. In these sequences, Denver’s level fell sharply.

A problem resolved last season with the contribution of Bruce Brown, Jeff Green and Christian Braun off the bench. Except that this summer, the first two left. So how can we reorganize the rotations in Denver?

I won’t offer any minutes. Nothing will be offered to anyoneclearly announces Michael Malone at the Denver Post. “If anyone, a player, thinks that he is automatically going to be given minutes as a substitute, he is wrong. They will have to earn it. I don’t give anything at all. »

No doubt that only Christian Braun will be guaranteed playing time. Even though he only has one season under his belt, his impact was such during the playoffs that his coach can’t really do without him, especially now without Bruce Brown and Jeff Green.

Because behind them, Denver’s replacements are generally very, very young with several rookies: Jalen Pickett, Julian Strawther and Hunter Tyson. Still in the youth department, we can add Peyton Watson and Zeke Nnaji. Additionally, Vlatko Cancar injured his cruciate ligaments this summer and will be out for a while. For some experience, you’ll have to look to Reggie Jackson, DeAndre Jordan and Justin Holiday.

It would therefore not be surprising to see Michael Malone rely on his elders, at least at the start of the season. “I expect Reggie Jackson to have a big season”even declared the GM of the Nuggets, Calvin Booth.

The 2023 champions will undoubtedly test several combinations to find the right balance. “It will be complicated to make choices among the replacements,” reassures Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. “Because we have a lot of players coming off the bench who can play in any team. »
