A new room for the Thunder

The days of the Paycom Center and its 18,000 seats are now numbered! According to the city of Oklahoma City, the Thunder franchise is in the process of finalizing the last details to formalize the launch of the construction of a new hall! This must still be submitted for adoption to the voters of Oklahoma City on December 12, who have expressed the desire to see the Thunder stay in OKC, without it increasing their taxes.

For the rest, everything is now set. The cost of the operation was estimated at $900 million, a sum for which the owners of the franchise will contribute up to $50 million. Its inauguration is estimated for 2029-2030, so we will have to wait a little longer. But once the venue is built, it will then become the home of the Oklahoma City team for the next 25 years!

The Thunder responsible for the creation of 3,000 jobs

“Perhaps the most important aspect of this agreement is its duration, which is double the commitment made in 2008 and will allow the Thunder to remain here beyond 2050. My children will be my age by the time this agreement concludes. END. For a generation, we will maintain the economic impact and quality of life benefits we enjoyed as a major league city. It’s an investment that pays off several times over.”, said Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt.

The business aspect is obviously essential and the city’s press release did not fail to highlight this aspect. A study reports that annual profits would be estimated at $600 million and that the construction of the hall and its operation will allow the creation of 3,000 jobs which will benefit the community.

As a reminder, the Thunder has played at the Paycom Center (successively called “Ford Center”, “Oklahoma City Arena” then “Chesapeake Energy Arena”) since its creation in 2008, the year the Sonics moved to OKC.
